The best eco friendly practices to dispose dog's poop are also easy to follow

Now that you are picking up your dog’s poop using biodegradable bags you can go one step further in the path to reduce your dog's carbon paw print. Here are two options to dispose dog waste:

1) You can compost it inside biodegradable bags at home or in a local community garden that has setup a compost bin. Experts recommend keeping this setup and bin far away from your vegetable gardens, and never use the resulting soil on anything edible; some pathogens might survive the process. The best practice is to ensure optimum temperatures and layering. Temperatures of 130 – 170º F for several days are needed to destroy pathogens.

It works like a home septic system by using enzyme and bacteria action to turn dog waste into a ground absorbing liquid that does not harm the environment. Just drop in waste, add water and digester, and wait for the digester to work. Ideal for most soils except clay.” We have not found in the market any dog poop digester bin that is made out of a recycled material, so hopefully manufacturers are considering this, but at least the functionality and waste disposal is very eco friendly and easy to use. The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) released a study in 2005 with guidelines on composting dog waste. Also, Metro Vancouver has posted in their site a very practical and easy step guide on how to compose at home. Some parks and neighborhood associations are starting to use waste recollection services from companies like Cayuga Compose. A very practical solution.

2) Feces from dogs can be flushed down the toilet so they are treated at a waste water treatment plant with other sewage. Don’t put dog poop down the storm sewers as these are designed to carry rain directly to creeks, which is not the right place for dog waste. Remember to check with your local community if there are restrictions on this activity for reasons such as a high water table.
